Egypt's ruling party gets majority in 1st round of People's Assembly polls

Egypt's ruling National Democratic Party, the NDP won maximum seats in Sunday's first round of the People's Assembly elections. The High Elections Commission said yesterday the NDP won 209 out of the 508 seats in the lower house of Egyptian parliament. Opposition parties secured five and independents seven. The main opposition Islamic Muslim Group, the Muslim Brotherhood, failed to win a single seat in the first round despite holding a fifth of the place in the last parliament. The remaining 287 seats will be contested in the Dec. 5 run-off elections. Turnout for Sunday's vote was 35 percent.
