Egypt’s Mursi ousted in coup; Chief Justice of Supreme Constitutional Court appointed interim President

Egypt’s first democratically elected President, Mohamed Mursi has been ousted in a coup by the army. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Constitutional Court has been appointed as the interim President of the country. He will head a caretaker technocrat government which will oversee early Presidential elections. A new constitution will be drafted followed by parliamentary elections in the country. The ruling Muslim Brotherhood said it is a coup against legitimacy and against the will of the people. The ousted President has been moved to an undisclosed location and a travel ban has been imposed on him from going abroad. Our West Asia correspondent reports that after the expiry of the 48 hour deadline last night, Egyptian Army Chief Abdel Fateh Al Sissi appeared live on Egyptian State Television. He said Mursi has to go on people’s demand. The constitution has been suspended. A caretaker Government will be formed under the Chief Justice of the Supreme Constitutional Court, Adli Mansour who is to be sworn in as the interim President today to oversee early Presidential elections. Mr. Mursi tweeted that the army action was a full coup rejected by all free men of Egypt. However, the opposition activist alliance welcomed the move saying it was a victory of democracy and not a military coup. Agitated Islamist supporters have pledged to continue their protests against the sacking of Mr. Mursi in Cairo's Nasr City and across the Nile delta, strongholds of the Muslim Brotherhood while opponents rejoiced at Cairo's Tahrir Square and other parts of the country.
