Egyptians voted in large numbers yesterday in their first taste of democracy after Hosni Mubarak's ouster. Officials said the numbers at polling stations were unprecedented for Egypt, where participation use to be was very small in the Mubarak era as voters assumed their ballots would make no difference.The vote was for a package of proposed amendments that would set the stage for parliamentary elections in June and presidential election in September. The amendments include temporary democratic reforms intended to curb some of the near-absolute powers enjoyed by Mr. Mubarak and require the government to draft a new constitution. The proposed amendment package must be approved or rejected as a bloc.
