Egyptian President says he will not contest next presidential election

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has said he will not stand for re-election in September as protests against his rule grow. Speaking on state TV, Mr Mubarak promised constitutional reform but said he wants to stay until the end of his current Presidential term. In his address, Mr Mubarak said he will devote his remaining time in power to ensure a peaceful transition of power to his successor. AIR West Asian correspondent reports that the Cairo and Alexandria demonstrations were the biggest since protests began last week. US President Barack Obama has called for immediate beginning of an orderly transition of power in Egypt. In a speech at the White House last night after he spoke for 30 minutes with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Mr Obama said the transition should lead to elections that are free and fair.
