Egypt's top court has struck down part of a law(2013) that allowed only officially sanctioned protests to be held in the country and required demonstrators to inform the interior ministry that they were planning a protest. It was constantly used against activists to jail them.

The Supreme Constitutional Court ruled that the article was unconstitutional as the constitution guarantees freedom of association and the right to peaceful protest. The law was passed months after Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who was army chief at the time, overthrew his Islamist predecessor Mohamed Morsi.
