In Egypt, the Court of Cassation, the Highest Appellate court has unanimously dismissed a lawsuit filed by the parliament against its dissolution. The court said, it has no jurisdiction to review the June 14 ruling by the Supreme Constitutional Court which held illegal the elections to the lower house of the parliament.
The decision is being viewed as a fresh blow to the newly elected President Mursi who issued a decree to recall the legislature by revoking the Supreme Constitution Court’s rulings. The move was seen as an affront to the judiciary and military council who endorsed the dissolution of the parliament. There has been no official comment on the court decision. On Wednesday, President’s office had stated that it respects the apex court orders and consultations will be held with political powers and legal institutions to break the impasse.
