In Egypt, the Court of Cassation has ordered retrial of 64 defendants in the Port Said football killings case. The case dates back to February 2012 when more than 70 Al Ahly club football fans were killed in a stampede during a football league match in Port Said. A criminal court in Port Said in its judgement in March 2013 handed out death sentences to 21 people who are reportedly fans of Port Said team Masry. It also gave 24 other defendants, including two policemen, sentences ranging from one year to life in prison. 28 other defendants, including seven senior security officials, were acquitted. Both the defendants and the prosecution appealed the verdicts, which had sparked protests and violence in the city. The retrial will take place in a different court district of the Port Said criminal court.
