Egypt cabinet panel orders seizing funds of Muslim Brotherhood

In a major setback to the Muslim Brotherhood, an Egyptian Cabinet panel has ordered seizing the funds of the Islamist group. The panel led by the Minister of Social Solidarity, Ahmed El-Borai, has also cancelled the registration of Muslim Brotherhood as a non-governmental organization. Muslim Brotherhood has challenged the court order on Monday. Egyptian interim Prime Minister Hazem El-Beblawi said in Cairo that the move follows the Cairo court's verdict. Our West Asia correspondent reports that the woes of the Muslim Brotherhood are far from over in Egypt. A Cairo court in its ruling on September 23rd told the Egyptian authorities to ban all activities of the Islamist group, dissolve it and confiscate its properties. Tightening the screws, a cabinet panel has now cancelled its registration as an NGO and ordered seizing its assets. In another development ,Egypt's State Commissioners Authority, a body that advises the government on legal issues has recommended dissolution of the Freedom and Justice party which is the political arm of the Islamist group. Muslim Brotherhood has existed outside of Egyptian law for decades and was only formally registered as an NGO in March this year. The Islamist group founded by Hassan Al Banna has been banned twice in the past in Egypt.
