EGoM to give cash subsidy to BPL families for kerosene

An empowered group of ministers, EGoM has in-principle agreed to give direct cash subsidy to the Below Poverty Line, BPL families for kerosene. Speaking to media in New Delhi, the Petroleum Minister Jaipal Reddy said the scheme will be launched after consulting the State governments. He said his ministry will have discussions with the State governments to evolve a consensus on the issue. The EGoM on fuel, headed by finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, met yesterday to consider recommendations of a task force on direct transfer of subsidies on kerosene, cooking gas and fertiliser headed by Unique ID Authority Chairman Nandan Nilekani. It has also proposed a mechanism to facilitate direct transfer of subsidies in the bank accounts of beneficiaries. The move will also curb pilferage and leakages.
