An Empowered Group of Ministers, EGoM, on food security is scheduled to meet Monday evening. The EGoM, headed by finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, is likely to discuss various proposals, including the sale of an additional 30 lakh tonnes of rice and wheat through the public distribution system and imposition of import duty on refined sugar. Besides this, the EGoM, is also likely to consider the draft food security bill, increase in the issue price of food grains for above poverty line families and sugar sold through ration shops. In the last EGoM, imposition of import duty was deferred due to high inflation. The food ministry is understood to have proposed 15% duty on white sugar.
