Efforts being made to counter militancy in NE: Chidambaram

Concerted efforts are being made to counter militancy in the North East. Replying supplementaries in the Rajya Sabha today, the Home Minister Mr. P. Chidambaram said that Central government is supplementing efforts of the states in the region for carrying out counter insurgency operations besides providing security for vulnerable installations and projects. Mr. Chidambaram added intelligence is being shared and financial assistance being provided to states for modernisation of police forces and strengthening of the security apparatus. Mr. Chidambaram added that the Centre is maintaining close and continuous coordination with the state governments as the security situation has improved in the region considerably. He said 214 people were kidnapped in the region in last year and so far six persons have been abducted.
