Educate policy makers about traffic issues: Home Secy

Union Home Secretary R K Singh has stressed the need to educate policy makers about traffic issues.

Inaugurating a seminar on strengthening traffic management systems and improving road safety in New Delhi on Wednesday, Mr Singh said, the burgeoning problem of traffic and resulting accidents and other hazards have not really been getting the due attention.

The Home Secretary said, steps should be taken to discourage individual transport and push people towards a convenient public transport system.

Mr Singh emphasised that all stakeholders involved in the subject of traffic management should come together to devise solutions to the menace of unruly traffic and unfortunate deaths that occur on roads.

An official release says, the three-day seminar which will debate a host of causes and solutions to meet the challenge posed by the rapidly increasing volume traffic and accidents, will present its recommendations to the Home Ministry after deliberations.

According to official data, 1.40 lakh fatality cases were reported in 2011. In addition to fatality cases, nearly 1.8 million people were seriously injured during last year.
