Edna Kiplagat wins first gold medal of World Athletics

Kenya's women distance runners dominated the opening day of the world championships at Daegu, South Korea, on Saturday. They remarkably snapping up all six medals on offer in the 10,000 metres and marathon. First, Edna Kiplagat claimed marathon gold in two hours, 28 minutes and 43 seconds. Priscah Jeptoo won the silver, while Sharon Cherop collected the bronze. In the evening session, Vivian Cheruiyot claimed gold in the 10,000 metres in 30 minutes, 48.98 seconds. The silver and the bronze also went to the Kenyan kitty. For India, Mayookha Johny qualified for the women's long jump finals. The Asian champion became only the second Indian to do so after Anju Booby George in the World championships. Mayookha, leapt 6.53 metre in the qualification round and finished sixth in Group B. However, Harwant Kaur, another Indian competing on Saturday, crashed out in qualifying round of the woman discus event after finishing 10th in a 12-athlete Group A.
