The Editors Guild of India protested to the Uttar Pradesh government over the rising cases of intimidation, threats and violence against journalists by her administration. Taking note of an incident of alleged manhandling of two journalists of a news channel, the Guild asked Mayawati to take all necessary steps to ensure that the media can function freely in the state. The statement issued by Guild President T N Ninan and Secretary Coomi Kapoor has cited instances where journalists were harassed by the Uttar Pradesh Police particularly while reporting recent incidents of violence against women.
