Economic, Strategic & Energy co-operation to dominate talks between PM & Myanmar Prez

Intensifying economic, energy and strategic cooperation will be the focus of discussions between the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and the visiting President of Myanmar U.Thein Sein in New Delhi today.

The Myanmar President, who is on a four-day state visit to India, will also discuss security and defence cooperation besides counter terrorism measures.

Myanmar has assured India that it will not allow its territory to be used by insurgents against India.

New Delhi will help Myanmar in capacity building in its armed forces. Spokesman of External Affairs Ministry Vishnu Prakash told reporters that a slew of agreements are expected to be signed after the talks. The economic cooperation between the two countries is on the upswing and the bilateral trade which is at present at $ 1.28 billion is expected to touch three billion dollars by 2015.

The two sides will hold discussions on key transport projects to accelerate connectivity between the two countries.

India is expected to grant a line of credit to Myanmar to boost bilateral investment. A large number of Indian Companies are already working there including ONGC Videsh.

Mr. Thein Sein, who reached New Delhi on Thursday, will be accorded ceremonial reception at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhawan on Friday.

He will hold talks with the External Affairs Minister S.M.Krishna.

The President Mrs. Pratibha Devisingh Patil is hosting a banquet in the honour of the visiting dignitary.

Mr. Thein Sein will also visit Indian Council of Agriculture Research on Saturday before leaving back home to boost cooperation in agriculture sector as Myanmar has vast tracts of cultivable land.

The spokesman said that India's growing relations in its extended neighborhood are a part of its Look-East Policy.

New Delhi has intensified economic engagement with the ASEAN countries and is actively engaged in negotiating a free-trade area agreement to boost commercial activity.

He asserted that the relationship of India with Myanmar is not directed against any country. In response to a question, he said, there is enough scope for both India and China to grow and there is no competition between the two.

AIR correspondent reports that the maiden visit of the President of Myanmar is expected to scale up political and economic cooperation between the two countries.

Myanmar has taken a slew of measures to democratise society since Mr. Thein Sein assumed power. These include release of Aung San Suu Kyi from house-arrest besides a large number of political prisoners from jail.
