ECI to form rules for deciding modus for casting of votes by people of Indian origin

Rules are being framed by the Election Commission of India for deciding the modus for casting of votes by ten million people of Indian origin, PIO, and Non Resident Indians, NRIs across the globe. Briefing newsmen on the 9th edition of Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas, the Overseas Affairs Minister Mr. Vayalar Ravi said this following the announcement of voting rights to PIOs and NRIs by the Prime Minister last year. The Parliament has already passed a law in this regard. The Overseas Ministry and External Affairs Ministry have had several round of talks on the issue and now the Election Commission of India is framing the rules. Giving details of the three day event beginning on Friday, the Minister said that 1,500 delegates from 51 countries are expected to participate in the event. The theme this year is engaging the global Indian. The special focus will be on presenting and showcasing north eastern state of the country.
