The Election Commission of India has complimented the Income Tax department for doing a commendable job in checking illegal funds during the recently concluded five states assembly polls and the Rajya Sabha polls in Jharkhand.
In a letter to the Chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Laxman Das, the Chief Election Commissioner, S Y Quraishi said the directorates of Income Tax department in these states kept a close vigil over movement of illegal cash concerned during the election process. He said the officers did a commendable job in ensuring purity of the election process through prompt and timely intervention in a challenging situation.
Mr. Quraishi also appreciated the role of the central and state excise police and paramilitary forces during the polls. The Chief Election Commissioner said a new counter-black money cell also created in the Commission to detect illegal funds and check money power during the polls.
