In Karnataka, the Energy Conservation Building Code, ECBC, will be implemented in all the government offices to make them energy efficient. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency, a statutory body under Union Power Ministry, will suggest ways to conserve electricity by following the code. The Power Minister in the state, Shobha Karandlaje said, this will help save about 16 million units of energy everyday. She was addressing a workshop in Bangalore today. To begin with, State legislature and Secretariat Vidhana Soudha, Government Guest houses, civil court buildings will be modified to implement the conservation building code. As part of the implementation process, the Bureau will also conduct training programmes for engineers, architects, contractors and members of the State public works department. Mr. Ajay Mathur, Director General of the Bureau, said that a building consuming five lakh rupees worth of power, can consume only three lakh rupees worth of power after turning energy efficient. Karnataka will be the tenth State in the country to implement the ECBC.
