Election Commission on Monday held a one day Workshop on Election Expenditure Monitoring in New Delhi with representatives of Political Parties of five states where Assembly elections are to be held. Elections will be held in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur next year. It was attended by 58 representatives of various national and state parties. Addressing the Conference, Chief Election Commissioner, Dr.S.Y. Quraishi, reiterated that all parties should exercise self restraint on election expenditure and strictly adhere to new set of instructions. He drew attention of political parties to the elaborate instructions on expenditure monitoring for the five states. Dr Quraishi said that Commission believed in preventive rather than punitive measures and called upon the parties to cooperate. Dr. Quraishi also made it clear that Commission will take trict action against use of black money in elections. Political Parities sought several clarifications from the Commission and also gave a number of suggestions to strengthen expenditure control.
