The Election commission has decided to withdraw Cricketer, Sourav Ganguly as its Icon for the Assembly Polls in West Bengal. Giving this information in Kolkata today, the Director General of the Election Commission, Mr. Akshay Rout said that they have taken the decision following a request from Ganguly. In a letter to the Commission, Sourav said that he is extremely unhappy as his name is being dragged into unnecessary political controversy. AIR Kolkata Correspondent, Arijit Chakraborty reports that Sourav recently took part in a VDO film shooting as Icon of the Commission to generate voters awareness for coming Polls in West Bengal. The Opposition Trinamool Congress had raised objections on Sourav’s neutrality alleging his closed links with some political functionaries in the State. However, the State Election Department rejected the allegation which was later ratified by the Commission.
