Election Commission is evolving norms to have tighter control over the use of money power during the coming elections. Addressing the media in Chennai this evening, Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla said the Commission will monitor election expenditure more closely not just in Tamil Nadu but in the whole of the country. <br/><br/>When asked about increasing the ceiling of expenditure, Mr. Chawla said it is for Parliament to decide. He urged the media to share information about the use of money power so that the Commission could take pre-emptive action.<br/><br/>Earlier today the Commission reviewed the election preparedness in the state with the Principal home Secretary, District Electoral Officers and Zonal IG’s. The CEC commended the state for completing 99% Photo Electoral rolls. He said the Election Commission was preparing an outreach programme to bring in new electors to the electoral system.<br/><br/>The Commission has recommended having one Booth Level Officer for every Polling Station covering 1200-1500 voters. The Commission also reviewed pending election cases with the police and asked district Collectors of any specific problems. The IGs gave an over view of the situation in Tamil Nadu and the Commission was generally satisfied.<br/><br/>Commenting on the phenomenon of paid news, the CEC said detailed instructions are given in the Commission’s website.
