The Chief Election Commissioner Mr. S.Y.Qureshi has asserted that commission will take effective steps to ensure that use of money power is kept under control in the ensuing assembly elections in five states. He was speaking to newsmen in Puducherry this evening, after the full election commission reviewed the poll preparedness in the union territory. He said the menace of money power in elections is widespread and there exists a case for a national voter education campaign to check the malpractice. Referring to complaints made by some political parties that distribution of money could increase in the run up to the elections, Mr Qureshi said the check flight and distribution of money in Puducherry, the number of flying squads will be increased from the present 10 to 30. He said for the first time all the 851 polling and 16 auxillary polling booths in the union territory will use web camera to record events. Mr Qureshi said the Chief Secretary has been asked to submit a report on allegations that anti dated cheques were issued to some persons to get assistance from the chief Minster’s relief fund.
