EC to conduct field trial of VVPAT in five states

The Election Commission will conduct field trial of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail, VVPAT in five states on the 24th of next month. Some political parties had recommended in October last year that the Commission should consider introducing VVPAT system, for further verifiability and transparency in the electoral system. The Deputy Election Commissioner Alok Shukla informed this in a press conference in New Delhi today. In the VVPAT system, when the voter presses the button for the candidate of his choice, a paper ballot containing the serial number, name of candidates and symbol of candidate will be printed. Mr.Shukla informed that all national and state political parties have been requested to depute their representatives and agents for the simulated elections so that they can give their views and opinion on the proposed system. He added that VVPAT system is already used in Venezuela and in some states of the US. The five districts where the trial will be carried out are — Leh, Thiruvananthapuram, East Khasi Hills in Cherrapunjee, East Delhi and Jaisalmer.
