EC to allocate about 150 million dollars for a new shelter over Chernobyl nuclear reactor

The European Commission says it will allocate about 150 million dollars towards the cost of building a new shelter over the Chernobyl nuclear reactor which blew up in 1986 and is still leaking radioactive material. The Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso promised the funds during a meeting with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich on Monday in Kyev. Mr. Barroso said he will make the official announcement at the opening of an international donor's conference today in the Ukrainian capital. Ukraine is seeking one billion dollars to seal the site of the world's worst nuclear disaster.The 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster later this month has gained new significance in the wake of the recent nuclear disaster in Japan.
