The Election Commission has asked the Income Tax Department to keep a strict vigil on financial brokers and Hawala operators during the forthcoming assembly elections in five States. The Commission has also urged the Income Tax Department for adopting stronger expenditure monitoring measures to control the use of money power, The Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi held a meeting with the Chairman of CBDT Sudhir Chandra on Wednesday and discussed the issue.The Commission held a separate meeting with the Institute of Chartered Accountant to discuss auditing standards for political parties. In a press release issued in New Delhi, the Commission has expressed concern over the fact that several political parties have neither audited their accounts nor maintained proper account books.
