EC says 'Right to Recall' not practical

The Election Commission says that 'Right to Recall' is not practical in the country's democratic set up. Talking to AIR on sidelines of a function in New Delhi, Chief Election Commissioner S Y Qureshi said that country's huge demographic variations and elaborate electoral process does not permit such a law as proposed by Team Anna.

Mr. Qureshi said that the commission has proposed to introduce an option of 'none of the Above' in the ballot. He however, clarified that it is not on the lines of 'right to reject'. Mr. Qureshi also said that Election Commission is in discussion with the government regarding electoral reforms. He added that the Commission is committed to eradicate electoral mal-practices like paid news and use of money and muscle power. The Chief Election Commissioner also said that generating awareness among the voters is also on the priority list.

Earlier, addressing the 44th convocation function of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication Mr. Qureshi described the paid news phenomenon as a deception to the voters. He however, credited the huge turn out in the recent assembly elections to the awareness campaigns initiated by the media.

Our correspondent reports over three hundred students were conferred with post graduate diplomas in various fields of journalism and advertisement during the convocation.
