The Election Commission has rescheduled the first phase of Assembly Elections in Uttar Pradesh.
Sixty constituencies spread over 10 districts of Pilibhit, Rampur, Bareilly, Lakhimpur Kheri, Shahjahanpur, Badaun, Moradabad, Bijnore, Bhim Nagar and Jyotiba Phule Nagar were scheduled to go to polls in this phase on the 4th of next month.
An Election Commission spokesman said that the new dates will be announced soon. The spokesman said, the notification for the first phase of polls will not be issued tomorrow, as scheduled earlier.
The decision has been taken due to uncertainty about the date of Eid-e-Milad un Nabi which may fall on the fourth of next month.
The EC spokesman said, the issue was also raised by the law and order enforcing agencies and district election officers of the state during the Commission's review meeting at Lucknow on 6th and 7th of this month.
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh administration has started covering the statues of Chief Minister Mayawati in different parts of the state as per the direction of the Election Commission.
The statues of elephant, which happens to be the election symbol of ruling BSP are also being covered to ensure level playing field for all parties in the polls.
More than 450 FIRs have been lodged in the state for violation of model code of conduct. The commission has taken actions against on more than 3 lakhs complaints for violation of code.
The Chief Election Officer of the state Umesh Sinha said that more than 3,000 places have been identified as vulnerable and about 20 thousand have been identified as troublemakers during elections.
