The Election Commission has issued a show cause notice to BJP leader Gopinath Munde for his statement that he had spent 8 crore rupees in the last Lok Sabha elections as against the prescribed ceiling of 25 lakh rupees.
In its notice, the Commission directed him to explain within 20 days the reasons for his failure to maintain a true and correct account of his election expenses.
Failure to give a satisfactory reply will make him liable for disqualification for being chosen as, and for being, a member of either House of Parliament or of the Legislative Assembly or Legislative Council for a period of three years from the date of order of the Commission. In his election expenditure account lodged with the District Election Officer, the BJP
leader had shown only nineteen lakh thirty six thousand nine hundred twenty two rupees as his election expenses whereas he publicly admitted at a function in Mumbai on Thursday that he spent 8 crore rupees on his election.
