EC issues directives for UP legislative council elections

The election Commission has said that voting process at all the polling stations in biennial elections for Legislative Council would be video graphed. The commission has said that videography should be continuous and uninterrupted under the supervision of an officer who would be accountable for it. Polling is slated on Thursday for 36 seats for Legislative Council from local bodies’ constituencies in the state.

The Commission has also advised in its letter to the Chief Electoral Officer of the state for taking all precautions to ensure free and fair conduct of the elections. The commission has said that the state government shall not release any kind of financial grant to the local bodies where an election from local constituency is in progress, nor make any announcement to this effect which is likely to disturb the level playing field.

The commission has clarified that no helper or companion should be allowed inside the polling booths for helping or assisting the voters except in the case of an illiterate, blind or infirm voter. The commission has said that during the poll, all the voters have to produce either the EPIC or any other identity document having a photograph of the voter or their identity cards issued by the local authorities concerned of which they are members.
