In Goa, the Election Commission has fully geared up to ensure free and fair polling in the Assembly elections tomorrow. The Election Commission is preparing to make use of the innovative Poll Monitoring System (PMS) in all the 40 Assembly Constituencies of Goa. This will be the first such occasion in the electoral history of the country. The Election Commission has already issued the photo-identity cards to all the voters. In addition, the eligible voters have been given Voters’ Slips. Now, it would be mandatory for the voters to bring along either the photo-identity cards issued by the Election Commission or the Voters’ Slips at the time of voting. The prominent leaders in the fray include Assembly Speaker Mr. Pratapsingh Rane, Deputy Speaker Mr. Mauvin Godinho, Chief Minister Mr. Digambar Kamat Leader of the Opposition Mr. Manohar Parrikar, Former Chief Minister Dr. Wilfred D’souza, and Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Mr. Subhash Shirodkar along with almost all the ministers in the state cabinet.The main plank of the electioneering was political stability and growth with special emphasis on legal mining, tourism and infrastructure development. The people have now got the opportunity to express their choice through polling and chart the next course of the state.The main contest in the Goa Assembly Elections would be between the ruling Congress-Nationalist Congress Party alliance and the Bharatiya Janata Party and Maharshtrawadi Gomantak Party combine. There are 215 candidates in fray for total 40 seats locked mostly in the multi-cornered contests including 74 independents and nine women.Congress party has fielded maximum 33 candidates while the BJP has fielded 28 along with Trinamool Congress, which is making maiden foray into the state elections, nominating 20 candidates. The other party candidates include Goa Vikas Party with eight, MGP , UGDP and NCP with seven candidates each along with Samajwadi Janata Party (Rashtriya), Janata Dal (United) and Samajwadi Party with five candidates each. The CPI and CPM, the two parties, which are fighting the electoral battle in a combined manner, have also fielded five candidates together.””
