The election commission will start a drive to update the details in the electoral rolls from tomorrow with a special focus on young voters, except the five poll-bound states. Addressing media persons after appointing Actor Rajkummar Rao as Election Commission's national icon today, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar said that 17-year-old youngsters can now apply in advance to have their names enrolled in Voter's list and not necessarily have to await the pre-requisite criterion of attaining the age of 18 years. The CEC said, the Electoral Roll will be updated every quarter and eligible youngsters can be registered in the next quarter of the year in which they will attain the qualifying age of 18 years. The CEC pointed out that India witnessed a more than four-fold increase in the number of electors since 1962 to over 95 crore this year but polling percentage among young electors is still low. He said the election commission is trying to fill the gap with various efforts including celebrity endorsement. Election Commissioner, Anup Chandra Pandey said, the voter turnout figure gets dampened by urban and youth apathy. He said, people from urban areas, young voters, and migrants formed a big part of the missing voters.
''
'' In the last Lok Sabha election around 30 crore voters did not cast their votes.
