EC directs Gujarat govt to file complaint or FIR against Modi for poll code violation

The Election Commission has directed the Gujarat administration to file a complaint or FIR against Narendra Modi for violating election law by displaying BJP's election symbol

and holding a press conference after casting his vote. The Commission said that Modi violated Representation of People Act by holding the press conference when the polling was underway in the entire state of Gujarat and in different parts of the country.

It said from the substance and tone, it is evident that Modi's address was a political speech intended to influence and affect the result of elections in the constituencies going to polls in different parts of the country.

In its directive to CEO Gujarat and DGP of the State, the Commission also asked them to proceed against all TV channels and other electronic media which carried the proceedings of the press conference live by filing separate complaints or FIRs against them. The Commission has asked for compliance report by 6 PM today.

Addressing the media after casting his vote in Gandhinagar, Gujarat today, Modi had alleged that the Congress has already accepted defeat as the party plans to support a Third Front government at the Centre to keep him out of the race for Prime Ministership.

Earlier, in its complaint to EC, Congress had demanded filing of an FIR against Modi for displaying his party symbol and making a speech after casting his vote.
