The Election Commission's decision to cancel the Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar Assembly constituency bye-election in Chennai has been welcomed by many political parties. Others seek a fool-proof system to check bribing voters by candidates to prevent the recurrence of similar instances.<br/><br/> The Commission countermanded the bye-poll as it was marred by charges of distribution of huge money and gift articles by political parties. The Income Tax raids on the premises of a serving minister Dr C.Vijayabhaskar unearthed several incriminating documents referring to the distribution of over 89 crore rupees to the voters in the constituency. <br/><br/>The Commission relied on the report of the IT Department apart from its own sources including the observers and surveillance teams. Meanwhile, the minister Mr Vijayabhaskar has appeared before the Investigation Wing of the Income Tax Department in Chennai today regarding an inquiry over the cash and documents seized during the raids. More from our correspondent:<br/><br/>The VK Sasikala-led AIADMK Amma party candidate TTV Dinakaran says the documents seized during the IT searches were not authentic and claimed he would win whenever bye-election is held. The opposition DMK working president MK Stalin has demanded a CBI inquiry based on the findings in the IT raid. <br/><br/>BJP state president Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan while welcoming the EC decision wanted to defer the bye-poll till an environment for a free and fair election is made possible. Congress state leader Thirunavukkarasu said election reforms with stringent measures to ensure an election without bribery is required. Many leaders and critics wanted debarring candidates proved guilty of money distribution.
