Eastern Railway cancels 4 major trains connecting Kolkata and rest of India to north Bengal, Assam

Eastern Railway today cancelled four major trains connecting Kolkata and rest of India to north Bengal and Assam due to the obstruction at New Cooch Behar in Northeast Frontier Railway, NFR, jurisdiction. The trains include Up Howrah-Dibrugarh Kamrup Express, Up Howrah-Guwahati Saraighat Express, Up Sealdah – New Alipurduar Teesta Torsa Express and Up Sealdah-New Cooch Behar Uttarbanga Express.

A total of 41 trains stand cancelled today due to the continued rail rok?o? on the fourth day today. The activists of Greater Cooch Behar People's Association, GCPA, are squatting on the tracks under an indefinite blockade at New Cooch Behar station in north Bengal demanding a separate state of Greater Cooch Behar.

A GCPA delegation led by Bangshi Badan Barman, last evening went for discussion with District Magistrate, P. Ulganathan at his office after three day's persuasion but the talks failed, our correspondent informs. Some local leaders of the ruling Trinamul Congress today met the GCPA leaders at the dharna site to arrange discussions with the state government but they were shoed away. The agitation continued seriously disrupting the regular movement of train traffic between Assam and rest of India from the north-east.
The GCPA demands include creation of a greater Cooch Behar state, or a Union Territory, carved out from parts of north Bengal and some Assam districts.
