The death toll on Sunday evening's earthquake has risen to 49 in India. 35 people have died in Sikkim on Sunday evening's powerful earthquake, eight in Bihar and six in West Bengal. The death toll in Nepal has been revised to 6 while in Tibet seven deaths have been reported. With this total toll in the quake has risen to 62.Over a hundred people have been injured in the 6.8 magnitude quake. Rescue and relief operations were today stepped up in the affected areas. The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has announced two lakh rupees as ex-gratia to next of kin of those killed in the earthquake. One lakh rupees will be given to those seriously injured.AIR Gangtok correspondent reports that in Sikkim, the death toll has risen to 35 with North District reporting 24 deaths. Six deaths have been reported from East district, West Sikkim-4 and South One. Many buildings have been damaged. The Chief Minister, Mr. Pawan Kumar Chamling has announced an ex-gratia payment of five lakh rupees each to the next of the kin of each of the deceased persons. He has also announced a financial assistance of 50,000 each for the seriously injured persons and 25,000 rupees each to the persons with minor injuries.Talking to reporters in New Delhi, the Home Secretary Mr. R.K. Singh said, the Centre is in constant touch with the Sikkim government on the developing situation. The power supply has been restored and the roads which were blocked due to land slide will be cleared by the evening.Omkar Kedia, spokesperson of the Ministry of Home Affairs said, officials along with National Disaster Management Authority, NDMA and the National Disaster Response Force, NDRF personnel have been working round to mobilize and facilitate response teams. He said, the situation is being closely monitored and every possible assistance is being extended to the States. 5 Teams of NDRF consisting of 203 personnel along with necessary rescue equipment have reached Bagdogra while another five teams of 200 personnel have been sent from Kolkata. They are held up at Bagdogra due to landslides causing road blockage at various places on the highway. Efforts are on to clear the roads.Army spokesperson Colonel A.S. Chauhan said in New Delhi that over 5,000 troops and nine helicopters have been dispatched by the army to carry out rescue and relief operations in quake-hit Sikkim. 5,000 troops in 105 columns and four ALH Dhruv and five Cheetah helicopters have been deployed in the relief operations by the army in the state.He said two jawans were killed in north Sikkim while the three vehicles missing since last night have been located and the troops in them are safe.The army formations in the state have been engaged in providing food and shelter to people in affected areas. At least 2,000 people have been provided help by the army. The earthquake, which measured 6.8 on the Richter Scale, has also caused substantial damage to certain military buildings in the area. The Indian Air Force, deployed five aircrafts for relief operations. 712 personnel of ITBP are already engaged in rescue and relief operations. The Indo-TibetanBorder Police rescued over 300 people inlcuding 22 foreign tourists in Pegong area of North Sikkim. Two ITBP buildings collapsed after the earthquake. The Border Security Force has also deployed its expert rescuers in the rescue and relief operations. In Bihar, one more person succumbed to his injuries today in Nawada district taking the death toll to eight. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced an exgratia payment of rupees one lakh fifty thousand for the kin of those killed in earthquake. Mr. Kumar has instructed officials to assess the damage caused due to earthquake. AIR Patna correspondent reports that several kutcha houses collapsed in adjoining districts of Nepal due to tremors. A number of houses were tilted in Patna,Darbhanga, Madhubani and Sheohar districts of the state. Power production at Kahalgaon thermal plant was disrupted for a few hours due to the earthquake.Three members of a family were killed at Sherghati in Gaya District following collapse of roof of their house. Two persons killed in Patna and Nalanda districts as wall of their houses fell on them. In another incident, two people died in a stampede while running for safety during earthquake in Darbhanga and Bhagalpur districts. The State Government has issued orders to alert all police stations, Block Offices, Hospitals and National Desaster Reforms Force (NDRF) teams in view of earthquake.West Bengal government has announced two lakh rupees compensation to the next of kin of the victim in the earthquake related incidents in the state. Chief Minister Ms.Mamta Banerjee informed that the death toll in the tremor has gone up to six in the state and the government is taking all possible steps to help marooned people. Ms.Banerjee left for worst quake hit Darjeeling district to assess extend of damage and to supervise relief and rescue operation. The Chief Minister will review the situation at a high level meeting at Kurseong in Darjeeling district this afternoon. AIR Kolkata correspondent reports that relief and rescue work are hampered in Darjeeling due to heavy rain. Personnel of Disaster Management Team have been engaged in Kurseong, Kalimpong and Siliguri sub-division for relief work. Landslides and crack in building have been reported from these areas. National highway No.31-A and 31-C connecting Sikkim from North Bengal have been closed. Many tourists and large number of vehicles are stranded on the road.
