Chinese authorities on Friday said twenty-one people were injured after a 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Thursday. Four of the injured are in critical condition. A local government spokesman said the quake rocked a border area between the region's city of Atux in the Kizilsu Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture and Kashgar Prefecture on Thursday evening. The quake also toppled 147 houses and severely damaged 171 others.
