Union Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said today that the electronic tolling system on 360 toll plazas will be operational before April this year. <br/><br/>Addressing a press conference on the sidelines of the ongoing Make in India Week in Mumbai, he said his ministry has already put the project on fast track. The Minister further said that the idea to have E-Toll is to reduce the queues at toll plazas. He said that the government will focus on hybrid model for developing new road projects. <br/><br/>Mr. Gadkari also said the government has set a target of increasing the total national highways network to 1.52 lakh km in the next 3 months from the current 96,000 km. He said that apart from this, the government has also planned to develop 2,000 water ports and 350 ring roads. <br/><br/>Stressing on the advantage of water transport and its cost advantage, Mr. Gadkari said the government plans to promote inland water transport in a big way. He said that his ministry is building three multi modal hubs at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Sahibganj in Jharkhand and Haldia in West Bengal on Ganga. He said that the government has planned to create 30 water ports on this stretch and overall 500 water ports across the country.
