In Tamilnadu, the sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption on Thursday conducted raids at the residences of the former DMK minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam and his relatives in Salem and in 15 other places including Chennai and Dharmapuri. Several documents are said to have been seized during the raids. The raids which began at seven am continued till noon. As the news spread several DMK supporters thronged the residence of the DMK heavy weight and raised slogans against the ruling AIADMK government. Reacting to the raid, Mr. Arumugam said that the raids were due to political vendetta and added that he had answered all questions raised by the officers. Earlier in a press note issued in Chennai, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption said that based on the outcome of the detailed enquiry, on the disproportionate assets, a case was registered at Salem on Wednesday. It also said that searches were conducted as an essential part of the investigation. The allegation is that the former Minister had accumulated disproportionate assets to the tune of 2 crore 88 lakh rupees when he was a minister from 2006 to 2011. Mr. Veerapandi Arumugam is a senior leader of the DMK and was earlier arrested in a land grab case but was later released on bail. Several former Ministers have been facing the heat after the AIADMK rose to power last year.
