The Dutch government collapsed on Saturday after coalition parties clashed over a NATO request to extend the Netherlands' military mission in Afghanistan.

The Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende said in Hague that he will offer his resignation alongwith that of the ministers and deputy ministers to the Queen.

He said he would also make available the portfolios of the remaining cabinet ministers of his own Christian Democratic Appeal, the majority coalition partner, as well as the smaller Christian Union.

Mr. Balkenende made the announcement after more than 16 hours of crunch talks failed to save the centre-left coalition he has led since February 2007.
