Dussehra being celebrated through out the country

The festival of Dussehra symbolizing the victory of truth over untruth and good or evil is being celebrated on Sunday. The effigies of Ravana, Meghnada and Kumbhakarna will be consigned to flames at many places. The idols of Devi Durga will also be immersed in various rivers, lakes and ponds.The President, Vice President and Prime Minister have greeted the people on the occasion. In her message, the President, Mrs Pratibha Devisingh Patil said that this festival inspires us to work for peace, unity and well being of the country and strengthens the spirit of harmony and oneness.In his message, Vice President Hamid Ansari wished the festival to bring peace prosperity and joy in our lives.The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh in his message has said that the Dussehra festival symbolises India's tradition of communal harmony and unity in diversity.UPA Chairperson Mrs. Sonia Gandhi has also greeted the people on the occasion of Dussehra saying may this festive season bring peace, prosperity and progress throughout the country.In Uttar Pradesh, Dussehra is being celebrated throughout the state. The effigies of Ravana, Meghnada and Kumbhakarna will be consigned to flames at many places.AIR Correspondent reports, as the Navaratri came to an end on Saturday, the people are celebrating Dussehra today with religious enthusiasm and joy across the state.In Ayodhya, Kanak Bhavan, Hanuman Garhi and other famous temples have been colourfully decorated.On Sunday evening, huge effigies of Ravana, Meghnada and Kumbhkarana will be burnt symbolising the burning of evil forces.The people have begun preparations for immersion of Durga idols at several places.The festivities of Mysore Dushehra culminate today on Vijaydashmi, the tenth day with a Jumbo savari or elephant parade on the streets of Mysore. Though 'Navaratri' is celebrated throughout the country, the private durbar by scion of the Mysore Royal Family and former MP Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, the golden throne, the caparisoned elephants, and the illuminated palace with its array of cultural programmes have combined to make Dasara in Mysore an unique experience.The main attraction is the colourful procession led by caparisoned Ambari Elephant named ‘Balarama', that carry the principal deity of the Mysore City Sri Chamundeswari in a Golden howdah weighing over 750 kgs.The Governor Hans Raj Bharadwaj, Chief Minister Yeddyurappa and his Council of Ministers will be present on this occasion. The Vijaydashmi procession headed by elephant Balarama and other five elephants goes winding through the gaily-decorated streets of the heritage city Mysore.An elephant led chariot, royal horse, cow and elephant, camels, horsemen; Musical bands belonging to State Police, Folk dancers form a part of the procession. Colorful tableaux created by different Government departments participate in the procession.The procession begins Sunday afternoon at the Mysore Palace and ends at the Banni Mantapa grounds, traveling a distance of about 2.5 miles. The culminating program of Vijaydashmi is the ‘Panjina Kavayatthu’ or a torch light parade that takes place in the late evening followed by a massive firework display and much jubilation on the streets. As in the last year, the daredevil stunts on motorcycles by a team of the Indian army and a Laser show will be part of the program.In Ahmedabad, Ramlila added attraction apart from Navratri. 35 to 55 feets tall effigies of Rawan- and Meghnad would be burnt on Sunday evening to symbolize the victory of good over the evils. People are eating sweets particularly- Jalebis with Fafada- through out the day.The Day is also auspicious for the new ventures-launching of new projects. Bookings of residential and commercial properties are taking place on a big way on Sunday. Then sales of cars and two wheelers also got boost on Sunday- in all major cities of Gujarat.
