Durga Puja biggest festival of Bengali gets off colourful start

Durga Puja, the biggest of the Bengalis festival gets off a colourful start on the Mahasashthi day today. The four day long festivity kicks off with the invocation of Devi Durga this evening. Our Kolkata Correspondent Arijit Chakraborty reports that entire metropolis is hit by the puja fever as brilliantly decorated pandals have been set up from one end to other parts of the city. As evening set in there is a riot of colours with dazzling illuminations when thousands of people are out on the streets to have a glimpse of idols. Beating of drums and blowing of microphones have given extra punch to the entire atmoshphire. To cater to heavy rush of passengers the Eastern, South-Eastern, Metro Railways and state buses have decided to run round the clock services during the puja days. President Pranab Mukherjee reached Kolkata this afternoon for four days visit to join his family’s Durga puja at his native village at Miriti in Birhum District .
