Delhi University Vice Chancellor Dinesh Singh has resigned. His resignation comes in the midst of a raging controversy over the four-year undergraduate programme – FYUP – rocking the varsity.

The University’s media coordinator Malay Neerav announced the decision of Singh to resign but did not give any details.

Dinesh Sing was instrumental in introducing the FYUP. His decision to quit the office has two days after the varsity was asked by the UGC to roll back the controversial four year course.

Singh has been under criticism over the FYUP which was introduced last year.

Matters came to a head when the UGC gave an ultimatum to the Delhi University and its affliated colleges to give up the four-year course and revert to its old three-year structure. They were asked to comply with the order by Monday forenoon.

However, the principals of the colleges affliated to the University met on Monday and decided to defer this year's admissions, which were to start today.

CPI(M) has welcomed the resignation of Delhi University Vice Chancellor Dinesh Singh.

The party alleged that Singh had violated the democratic norms in the university by not involving elected teacher and student representatives in the decision making processes. In a statement, the party Polit Bureau said, it is essential for the University Grants Commission and the university faculties to ensure that the interests of the students who were forced to enroll in the Four Year University Programme are protected in all respects.

The CPI(M) said the admission process for the current year should also not be delayed in any way.
