Delhi University today scrapped its controversial Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) and reverted to three-year course which existed upto 2012-13 session.
Vice Chancellor Professor Dinesh Singh asked the principals of colleges of the University to start admissions for the new session. He said that the DU recognizes the need of the hour and it is of paramount importance to protect the interests of the students by ensuring the start of the admission process.
Meanwhile, the University has set up a 12-member committee of principals to look into the issue of admissions under three year undergraduate course.
With the decision to scrap the controversial four year undergraduate programme, the stand-off between the UGC and DU has come to an end. The University administration was adamant to continue with the Four year course but the consistent pressure from UGC and strong protests by student and teacher associations forced it to retract to three year course.
Consequently, all colleges affiliated to the University will now start admission process for the current academic session. Students seeking admissions in various courses had to suffer a lot as the controversy led to delay in the admission process which was scheduled to start on 24th of this month. Over 2.7 lakh students have applied for admission to over 54,000 seats in 64 colleges of the University.
In the meantime, several B.Tech students of the University staged a protest outside the UGC office demanding that their four-year curriculum should not be changed into a three-year course.
