Infant Mortality Rate has come down in the country. According to Sample Registration System infant deaths have dropped to Fifty deaths per one thousand live births at national level in 2009. Registrar General of India (RGI) under Ministry of Home Affairs on Thursday noted that Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) was fifty three per one thousand in 2008. The IMR for rural areas has also declined from 58 to 55 infant deaths per one thousand live births. Goa has reported the lowest IMR of 11 infant deaths in states followed by Kerala with 12 infant deaths per one thousand in 2009. However, in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh IMR remained at a high of 63 per one thousand.
