Draft Lokpal Bill to come up before Union Cabinet on Sunday

The draft Lokpal Bill will come up before the Union Cabinet today for its approval before presentation to Parliament. Disclosing this, the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has said that his government will make every effort to pass the bill in the current session of Parliament itself. He was talking to reporters on board the special flight on his way back to New Delhi from Moscow, Dr. Singh said there should be no doubt about the sincerity of the government in this regard.

Dr. Singh said India has the ability to sustain a growth rate of 8 to 9 per cent in the next five years but we cannot be oblivious of what is happening to the world economy.

On the FDI issue, the Prime Minister said that a broadbased consensus has to be evolved once the elections to the state assemblies are over. He said, his government is committed to the reforms process.

On the Mullaperiyar dam issue between Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the Prime Minister hoped that good sense will prevail on the leadership of the two states and the matter will be resolved in a mutually satisfactory manner.

The Union Cabinet is also expected to take up the National Food Security bill for approval today. The bill aims to provide legal entitlement to subsidised foodgrain to 63.5 per cent of the country's population.

Food Minister K V Thomas has said that he has explained the provisions of the Bill to all the members, including those from allies. He expressed the hope that the draft Bill will get the Cabinet approval. He said once the Cabinet approves the bill, his Ministry will finalise the draft Bill and try to introduce it in the current winter session of Parliament, as promised.
