Draft guidelines for fresh BPL census sent to states: Pawar

The government informed the Lok Sabha that new guidelines for the next round of BPL census in rural and urban areas are yet to be issued. Replying to questions on the issue in the house today, the Agriculture and Civil Supplies Minister Mr. Sharad Pawar said the proposed guidelines for identifying the BPL families have been sent to the states for comments.<br/><br/>He said that according to independent evaluation by two organisation, there is large scale leakage and diversion of the subsidized rations in the Public Distribution System. He said that more than one crore bogus cards were found to have been issued earlier.<br/><br/>He said that while going by the 93-94 figures, 36 per cent population is below the poverty line but according to the estimates of 2004-05 the number has come down to 27.5 per cent. He said that the recommendation of unversalisation of the PDS has not been accepted because the government wants to concentrate on the sections, which deserve to be included for benefit through the targeted PDS.<br/><br/>
