Dr. Verghese Kurien, father of India's White Revolution passes away

Verghese Kurien, the Father of India's White Revolution and Founder Chairman and Managing Director of Amul passed away last night at Nadiad in Gujarat. He was 90. He died a natural death due to his old age. His body will be kept at Anand to pay tributes by public.

Kurien was 28 when he came to Anand, Gujarat in 1949, and was soon working hard to help a budding cooperative to grow. AIR Ahmedabad Correspondent reports that US-trained metallurgical engineer – and a nephew of the then finance minister John Mathai -Kurien decided to quit government job to join a nascent dairy cooperative at a meagre salary. Milk procurement of the cooperative has grown from a few hundred liters a day in early 1950s to over 90 lakh litre a day at present under one of India's most popular brands 'Amul'.
