Dr Manmohan Singh in Trinidad to attend CHOGM Summit

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is in Trinidad to attend the 41st Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting beginning on Friday. Climate change will dominate the agenda in the last major Summit in the island capital, Port of Spain before the Copenhagen climate talks. The Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma has said that reaching a solution is matter of survival for the frontline countries like Maldives, Tuvalu and Kiribati. The UN Chief Ban Ki-moon, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Danish Prime Minister Lars Rasmussen are attending the three-day Summit. Another key issue in the CHOGM meeting will be the venue for the 2011 Commonwealth Summit, with the UK vowing to block Sri Lanka's bid. The Trinidad Summit will also discuss the issue of Rwanda's entry bid.The Commonwealth's 53 nations comprise about two billion people, or one-third of the planet's population. The leaders are meeting days after pledges by the US and China to limit their greenhouse gas emissions.
