In the Democratic Republic of Congo, at least six people were killed and more than 50 injured in widespread protests. A spokesman for the UN mission to the country said police used tear gas and gunfire to disperse thousands of anti-government demonstrators across the nation yesterday. Security forces arrested 69 people countrywide, said U.N. spokeswoman in Congo Florence Marchal.<br/><br/>The government cut off SMS and internet services yesterday across the country to discourage gatherings.The protesters were demanding that President Joseph Kabila step down. Kabila, whose mandate ended in December 2016, had agreed to hold an election by the end of 2017. <br/><br/>But Congo's election commission later said the vote cannot be held until December 2018. Kabila can remain in power until the next election is held, although he is barred by the Constitution from seeking another term in office.
