Doyen of Indian media industry K.M. Mathew passes away

Chief Editor of Malayala Manorama daily and a doyen of Indian media industry K.M. Mathew passed away in Kottayam in Kerala this morning. He was 93. Mathew was a former Chairman of Press Trust of India. He also served as President of Indian Newspaper Society and Chairman of Audit Bureau of Circulations. His funeral will take place tomorrow. K.M. Mathew had played a key role in making Malayala Manorama one of the major Indian language dailies after he took over the reins of the media house a few decades ago. A Padmabhushan awardee, he was also a recipient of the BD Goenka Award. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and several leaders have expressed condolence over the death of K.M. Mathew. Dr. Singh and Mrs. Sonia Gandhi have called up the bereaved family and conveyed their condolences. In her condolence message, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni has said, Mathew was a visionary and recalled his contribution towards development journalism. She said that Mathew was a pioneer for the development of language media in the country. Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, leaders of political parties and people from different walks of life expressed profound grief at the passing away of Mathew.
